Ent-Wicklung, 2022 Un-Becoming, 2022

As part of a university course on object and space, I conducted a 3-hour-and-45-minute performance exploring themes of control and the ambiguous process of transformation. Kneeling between two walls, I had a nylon thread stretched from a nail in the corner over my shoulder. In my hands, I held a tangled mass of nylon — the material I had engaged with throughout the semester.

The act of working with the nylon was ambiguous, as it was never clear whether I was untangling the knots or creating new ones. This reflected the process of un-becoming — of both self and material — where progress and entanglement are linked. Within this framework, I became both the master of strings and the puppet.

For more than three hours, I remained fully focused on the act of knotting and unknotting. At the pre-determined three-hour mark, I invited another person to enter the space. Between us lay a pair of scissors. The decision of when to cut the thread — and thereby end the performance — rested with them.
